Baba Yaga Sculpture
The legendary Baba Yaga! I love Patricia Polacco's children's book "Babushka Baba Yaga" which heavily influenced this mixed media sculpture with the addition that her wool hair and cotton shirt have captured the glistening moisture of high altitude flight.
Yaga is made with a variety of materials, her head and mortar are high fired redware/terra cotta, while her hands and feet are sculpted with paperclay. Her body is wool over a wire frame, which was then clothed in cotton fabrics which were stiffened to represent the wind. Her cloud is paperclay on a wood base with metal feet and her pestle is wood, hand turned right here on the homestead. All painting was done with acrylics and watercolors, then everything was sealed with MSC.
